about

Seldom I get surprised by music played on the saxophone.
“We heard it all before”… pops up to my mind… and rightfully mostly.
Even if that is the worst kind of commentary ever… (isn´t it?) since it tells all about a non-curious attitude.
And curiosity is all!!

The innovations made on the Adolphe Sax-invented-brass-machine were many. And they were mostly made early on. Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Albert Ayler, Peter Brötzmann, Roland Kirk, Evan Parker, John Butcher, Anthony Braxton, Christine Abdelnour are among the true pioneers.
Many new techniques appeared from the contemporary music scene as well as from the ethnic music scene and creative rock. Over the years inspirations and informations were transformed into new territories by the younger generation of sax improvisors, Mette Rasmussen, Anna Högberg, Signe Emmeluth, Isak Hedtjärn and others.

But what Don is doing is a whole new thing! Dope!
This is NEW to me.
And I love it!
Because:
He has a total control over the instrument, with advanced extended techniques and various mutes and tools – in a way I haven’t heard before! Without control – no freedom.
This shit is spectacular! And unpredictable!
The exactness of the music is stellar. A precise music with clear directions that still feels FREE! I kid you not!
And quite amazing: what happens usually when musicians find a new angle – a new technique – they stick to it and stop exploring the music.
Don is exploring.
Making research.
And finding shit!
I LOVE IT!
This is all about the MUSIC. And the technique never gets in the way of it. RIGHT ON!

Gràcies, Don!
